What does IPTV mean?
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. Instead of receiving TV through a rooftop aerial (like Freeview), a satellite dish (like Sky) or a cable network (like Virgin Media), the picture travels over the internet, the same way a web page or a video call does.
Many UK broadcasters already use IPTV technology behind the scenes: catch-up players and the newer broadband-delivered TV platforms all stream over IP. When people talk about an "IPTV subscription", they usually mean a service that gives them a list of live channels plus a video-on-demand (VOD) library, watched through a player app.
How does IPTV work?
The process is the same on almost every device:
- You choose a plan based on how long you want it for and how many screens you need.
- You receive your access details, usually as Xtream Codes (server, username, password) or an M3U playlist link.
- You add them to a player app such as IPTV Smarters Pro on your Smart TV, Firestick or phone.
- The app loads the channels, TV guide and VOD, and you start watching.

What do you need for IPTV in the UK?
1. An internet connection
As a rule of thumb, allow around 10 Mbps for HD, 20 Mbps for Full HD and 30 Mbps for 4K per screen. Stability matters as much as speed: a wired Ethernet connection or good mesh Wi-Fi makes a big difference on busy evenings.
2. A compatible device
- Smart TVs from Samsung, LG and Android TV brands
- Amazon Fire TV Stick and Fire TV devices
- Android TV boxes, Formuler and MAG boxes
- iPhone, iPad and Android phones or tablets
- Windows PCs and Macs
Step-by-step setup is covered in our guides for Smart TV, Firestick, Android, iPhone and iPad and PC and Mac.
3. A player app
The app is what you actually see on screen. IPTV Smarters Pro is the most widely used, but there are good alternatives. See our comparison of the best IPTV apps in the UK.
What can you watch?
A typical UK-focused IPTV subscription combines:
- Live UK channels, including regional versions such as BBC Scotland, S4C or UTV
- Sports channels from the UK and abroad
- International channels for viewers who want TV from other countries
- On-demand films and series, plus catch-up on many channels
- An electronic programme guide (EPG) so you can see what is on
Channel line-ups vary between providers and can change over time, so always check the list before you buy.

Is IPTV legal in the UK?
IPTV as a technology is completely legal and is used by major UK broadcasters. What matters is whether the channels you watch are properly licensed by the service you use. You also still need a TV Licence to watch live TV in the UK, whatever the technology. Our guide on TV Licences and IPTV explains the rules.
How to choose a reliable IPTV service
- Clear plans: duration, number of screens and price should be stated up front.
- Fast activation: details should arrive within minutes, not days.
- Real support: a way to reach a person, for example on WhatsApp, if something goes wrong.
- Stable streams: look for HD, FHD and 4K options and servers suited to UK broadband.
- Transparent policies: read the terms and refund policy before you pay.

Frequently asked questions
Is IPTV the same as streaming apps like Netflix?
Both use the internet, but on-demand apps only offer their own catalogue. IPTV usually means live TV channels with a TV guide, often combined with on-demand films and series, in one player app.
Do I need a special box for IPTV?
No. Most Smart TVs, an Amazon Firestick, an Android TV box, a phone, a tablet or a computer can run an IPTV player app such as IPTV Smarters Pro.
Can I use IPTV anywhere in the UK?
Yes. IPTV only needs an internet connection, so it works the same in a city flat, a rural cottage or a holiday let, with no aerial or dish.
